Members of the New Glarus Fire Department do perform grass burns for both areas prescribed by the DNR as well as at the request of landowners looking to clear dead vegetation from acreage. Our standard fee as of 2012 is $25 per acre with a $250 minimum. We request that a defined perimeter be setup by the owner prior to the burn taking place. The perimeter can either be a mowed path or a plowed strip. This creates a safer environment for both our firefighters and adjacent properties as establishing a fire line in heavy fuel areas is difficult and dangerous. Fees may increase if an adequate boundary has not been established.
Demand for our services has grown steadily since we became certified by the DNR and began performing prescribed burns for landowners with land in DNR programs requiring it. All of our firefighters are volunteers and perform the burns on their own time for the fundraising efforts of the New Glarus Fire Department membership. Due to the limited burning window available to us as the snow melts and the natural vegetation begins to green, we are not able to accommodate all requests. We will prioritize our burns by many different factors, including: staff availability, obligations of landowners to have the prescribed burn performed, accessibility to the property, and proper preparation of the area by the landowner such as a perimeter being created.
If you are interested in having us come out and burn your property, please contact us via the Info section on our homepage.

New Glarus Firefighter among those that receive life saving award |
|

Jim Moldenhauer of the New Glarus Fire Department was among 3 who received awards presented by New Glarus Police Chief Steve Albaugh for saving the life of a 2-year-old child that nearly drowned late in 2009. As a First Responder of the New Glarus Fire Department, Jim responded directly to the scene when New Glarus Fire/First Response was paged to the potential drowning incident. Jim's efforts in combination with the homeowner and the responding NGPD officer saved the life of the child. The New Glarus Fire Department is proud to have Jim Moldenhauer as a member. His actions during the incident are an example of the type of response that the New Glarus Fire Department has prided itself on for many years. Congratulations to Jim on the recognition he received serving the community as only he knows how.

Monroe Hospital Foundation Grant |
|
The Monroe Hospital Foundation has awarded the New Glarus Fire Department with a grant to assist in the purchase of a rescue manikin. This manikin will allow us to more realistically simulate rescue situations by providing a simulated victim without endangering the safety of real person. We train year around for any situation we can imagine or simulate and are constantly looking for ways to make ourselves better firefighters. This tool will certainly enable us to do that. |

New Glarus Community Foundation Grant |
|

Thanks to a generous grant through the New Glarus Community Foundation, the New Glarus Fire Department was able to purchase flashlights for each member to have on their coats. Having a powerful flashlight quickly accessible is an invaluable tool for most all operations whether it be search and rescue operations or just working at night. We at the New Glarus Fire Department would like to thank all of New Glarus for its continued support as we work to keep our friends and neighbors safe. |
